Oh. And no confusion intended. But the fact remains that HDCP only applies when a video source is sending 720p or higher resolution to any of the outputs, whether they're being used or not. There is no content protection when only generating 480p or less.
Let's also, referring to a previous response, not confuse s-video with SD video, although they are related.
The main point is the first poster in this sequence just needed to know what to do to solve their problem using the existing equipment.
First, use the 10pin adapter (it's NOT an s-video socket) from Directv to send SD audio/video (why does the 54 not have a composite video out?) to the dvd recorder. Use the hdmi adapter to component to send HD to the tv. IMHO, having been with D* since its infancy, it's shameful that they have taken this backward step. Directv should also supply a free HDMI to components adapter for those who need it.
Don't forget to set the Genie's output to standard def by holding the exit button on the remote until the message displays that the receiver is set for standard def. If you dont the Genie will sense that a standard def device is in use and block the remote control signal internally. Your DVD recorder will only record a standard definition signal anyway.
Hope all of our info was helpful.
